00:00 Vintage Style Introduction
It’s hard not to notice just how well vintage gents used to wear their clothes! We’ll take a look at the differences seen in the menswear of yesteryear to see how (as well as how much better!) classic style was done then.

01:30 1. Black Tie
Vintage gentlemen tended to own their own Black Tie ensembles and they dressed up more in the past. Nowadays, many men either don’t dress up for special events at all or rent a tuxedo.

05:28 2. Shoes
Dress shoes were considered major investments in the past. Shoes weren’t just treasured, they were treasures!

08:23 3. Socks
Vintage gentlemen took socks as seriously as shoes. Colorful socks in a variety of designs were a staple of classic menswear.

10:12 4. Trousers
Trousers had a flattering high waist that falls on the natural waist and not just above the hips. In the 1910s and ’20s they were slimmer; in the 1930s they got fuller, but they always had a well-fitting high rise.

13:18 5. Dress Shirts
Vintage gentlemen knew the right shirt for the right outfit and they’re not afraid to introduce patterns and pastel tone colors. From their dress shirts, they build a collection that suits their lifestyle, wardrobe, and climate.

15:51 6. Odd Combinations
Vintage gentlemen had to make fewer garments go farther so they developed a sense for creative and stylish combinations.

16:59 7. Neckwear
They crafted collections of neckties and bow ties suitable for work, play, and formal occasions.

20:22 8. Hats
How could hats look so right on vintage gentlemen? Vintage gentlemen grew up in a society where the rules and traditions of wearing hats were taught and valued.

21:29 9. Overcoats
They have high standards for quality so vintage gentlemen knew to never skimp on clothes that keep you warm.

23:21 10. Pajamas
Vintage gentlemen understood that even if most people will never see you in a sleeping garment, it’s still worth getting a good one for your own benefit.

24:49 BONUS: Watches
Vintage gentlemen employed different face styles, bands, and materials for watches that fit their style and the occasion. They also treated watches like treasured family heirlooms.

Hopefully, we’ve shown how the style of the past isn’t gone forever.

  1. Showing what men are doing sartorially without matching it with contemporary women – is unbalanced & poorly informative!

  2. High rise pleated trousers are really hard to find these days. Everything else one needs to look dapper is still readily available. Just takes a little time to look for it. French cuffed shirts, nice sports coats, vests, overcoats, hats, dress shoes, dress watches, it’s all still there and not only luxury items but in the medium price range if one is on a budget. Key is to know what one’s doing but for that we have Gentleman’s Gazette and their extremely helpful videos.

  3. I’m butch so I find that a masculine style really suits who I am. I first want to extend a big thank you to the Gentleman’s Gazette – although this channel may at first seem to be the most vintage fashion focused of them all, it’s actually among the most timeless men’s fashion channels on Youtube, unlike all those cookie-cutter men’s channels telling men that they HAVE to dress a certain, trendy fitting way (looking at you, tight-fitting suits) and that they have to have a certain body type to even be attractive. I really appreciate the emphasis put on creating your own personal style, using the rules of classic fashion as guardrails and a means to create good looks more consistently while working with your body’s features, not against them. This is helping me immensely in seeing more formal fashion as a way of expressing myself at occasions where I want to shine instead of something constricting.
Today, I was at a celebration honoring this year’s statewide best graduates from apprenticeships, and I’m super happy that I get to attend the national one as well as I placed best in my entire country. While previously, such occasions would taunt me months in advance because the fashion side of things was so overwhelming, I now have a really basic formal wardrobe and today, I really enjoyed dressing up for the occasion and I felt really confident, all thanks to your advice.
It was sad to see how many of the guys there did not know how to dress properly, with linen shirts with button down collars paired with a suit, pants so long they were really bunching up at the bottom and buttoned lower buttons on suits.

  4. High rise pants are so comfortable! When I was a kid my mom was pretty confused about why I always pulled my jeans up as high as I could, I just didnt find it comfortable to have them on my hips. As an adult I tend to wear pants on my hips cuz I usually have to buy them a little too big, but I really should take the advice of finding a tailor. I dont care if I paid $3 or $300, I want my clothes to last and look nice!

  5. With ounce you mean like actual weight? 36 ounces seem low, thats just about 1 kg. my nothing-special one from the 60s is twice that

  6. I went in to men’s warehouse in search for a classic fit suit for prom and the employees were shocked that I even mentioned classic fit. The vintage and straight fit look is my favorite look and nobody at my school will expect it haha.

  7. I’m low middle class or working class in England, minimum wage etc, the more I see the downfall of man and society, the more I look to
the past (as we all do) and I have found using less technology, driving an older luxury car and dressing this way does make everything feel so much more refined in a time of darkness

  8. There is no such thing as high rise trousers that work for MY body type. I already have longer legs out of proportion to a short torso. So, I am out of proportion before I even put pants on. High rise would just make it worse.

  9. The #1 thing I enjoyed about cruising was the dress code for dinner in the main dining room. I remember a guy showing up in his ‘dress’ t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. He was denied entry much to his chagrin and walked away cursing the front of the house people. His wife and small children were so embarrassed they refused to walk away with him.

  10. The other thing that added to the classic good looks was the fact that they had their clothing washed and pressed (yes, folks, I mean with an iron). I hate to admit how casually I’ve been dressing and your videos have inspired me to dress up more often and to take better care of my clothing. Keep up the good work!

  11. My only quibble is with the high rise trouser recommendation. Shorter men with shorter inseams and rises have a hard time with high rise trousers. They just look wrong. Unless for some reason you have a naturally higher rise, most men under 6 feet tall would benefit more from mid to low rises. However, we do benefit from wearing suspenders which allow us to avoid the horizontal line of a belt and tend to lengthen our appearance much in the way that vertical stripes do on shirts, suits and socks.

  12. Modern men dont even sew the hem of there pants and dont shine there shoes this is a generation of bums

  13. In japan you can get dress socks relatively cheap, i guess becuase everyone still wrars a suit. Theyre great and last years

  14. The last time I saw someone wearing a neckerchief on the street was last summer where everyone was given a matching one. The other day I wore a red neckerchief as a pocket square to match my outfit

  15. Good video. You covered the clear differences without denigrating today’s lack of style. (Well, not too much.)

  16. I’d love to dress up more, but man, finding nice looking clothes that fit and aren’t hot and tight seems like an impossible task.

  17. I enjoy your video but I must disagree with something you said. You said, “Every man I’ve ever seen wearing a white tie tallcoat just looks awesome.” Apparently you didn’t see Trump when he meet Queen Elizabeth. Other then that I agree with everything you said. I get all my shirts made because I’ve found it’s cheap to have a shirt made then to buy one of the rack and have it altered.

  18. My tip for shoes: Check the used market. I have bought so many of my shoes used, because some people sell their shoes after only a handful of wears because it’s only then that they notice they do not fit them. I got a 400$ pair for 50$ that has only been worn once because the guy took the new shoes to the cobbler, had a rubber sole protector glued on, then noticed the pair was too small, but he could not return it anymore for obvious reasons. It is my favorite pair right now. Another pair I got was completely neglected, sold for 30$ (300 new) and was looking like new after one hour of shoecare.

  19. I know it’s about tradition but i don’t like the trousers stripes. Are they really that necessary? Can You rock a black tie without them?

  20. 12:36 that isn’t tactical pants that’s a custume/street wear… Real tactical pants are just modern cargo pants aka do you really want to mess/say your cooler then the guy on Seal team 6 who costs million of dollars to field?

  21. Funny, as started watching this Swedish tv talked about some treasure trove of vintage, never worn, clothes from some store or warehouse.

Loads of clothes from the 40’s – 70’s.
They are now being sold in Stockholm.

I would have loved to go there and get some 40’s – 50’s suits, shirts and coats.

  22. @gentlemansgazette : at 11:07 (in the background)- Is it possible these days to wear the original knickerbockers (as shown in the video at 11:07) without "being looked at", in the village and in the city and outside of golf or other sporting activities? – – Maybe there will be a separate video for this?

  23. I’m a girl, in 2 week I’m going to college and am planning to rock such looks, wish me luck, obviously I won’t look like an distinguished man…..

  24. Clothes just looked better back then! Nowadays, the suits always look like they’re a size or two too small for the wearer. Especially the pants! They all look like they hurt. And since not wearing socks seems to be a fashion trend, the men don’t look completely dressed. It’s pretty awful and totally not sexy in my opinion.

My SO and a close friend both are hat dudes. My SO has everything from newsboy to Fedora to Stetson and🎉 some of his hats cost more than some of my Le Creuset cookware! My friend has an amazing collection of Fedoras and Panama hats, too.

  25. I don’t think a farmer was working in the field in a suit. He likely wore one on Sunday to church if he had one at all

  26. Leather shoes are no longer that cool. The animal exploitation that got denounced in the fur and leather industries should have made us move to more ethical choices. Nothing says ”gentleman” as much as fair wage for the workers, good working conditions and better environmental standards. Having those shoes repaired by a local shoemaker and taking care of our old leather is also a good way to disinvest in these products and move to ecofriendlier options.

  27. Why does no one wear an ascot? Well watching British TV drama for centuries, the guy with the ascot is always the guy wo did the killing, tax fraud or was unfaithful to his wife.

  28. Just give me basic blue/black/grey suits, solid color ties, and sensible dress shoes. It gets the job done so I can go about doing mine.

  29. As someone sitting here, quite happily, in my bedroom with my bow tie on, my favorite suit jacket, and at my vintage desk. I realize I have never been happier in my life. That is all thanks to this channel’s enlightenment on classic menswear and living.

I don’t doubt that this is the same story for many other viewers and thank you for doing this for us. I’ve been obsessed with this channel since I was 13, and 5 years later my love for it grows. To all those still developing their style, stick to it – there are loads of benefits!

  30. I’m a military guy who retired two years ago. Last week was the first I forgot to wear a belt, I felt totally nekkid. It’s a thing. When you are supposed to be the “decider of things” you have to command the room.

  31. My granddad was blue collar, so he never wore suits, he wore long sleeved button up shirts, with jeans, black leather boots, black leather belt with silver belt buckle, and a jumper. He had a normal green coat.
